Dan O’Dwyer Tackles Second Project as Volunteer Build Captain For Drake House Village.

The Drake House in Roswell, Georgia provides single mothers and their children in the North Metro Atlanta area short term housing while providing them educational, empowerment and mentoring programs that will help them to become financially self-sufficient and contributing citizens to their Communities.  Through the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association’s designated Charity, Home-Aid, Dan O’Dwyer of O’Dwyer Properties has volunteered to lead a total renovation of two existing eight-unit apartment buildings, more than doubling the Drake House’s capacity to serve homeless woman and their children.  This increase from 44 beds to 100 beds will afford the Drake House extended housing capacity for successful graduates for up to 24 months. “My goal is to save half the normal expenses for the renovation,” O’Dwyer told guests at the groundbreaking. This will be the second Drake House volunteer project for Dan O’Dwyer, a former President of Homeaid. In 2006 he led a total renovation of two existing eight-unit apartment buildings, helping to give the Drake House its first crisis housing.  For Dan, building homes and giving back to the Community go hand in hand. His goal has always been to leave the world a better place and is reflected in his volunteer work and Company ethics. Marietta, Ga. (November 8, 2017) – “Cobb County is our home, and the holidays are such a heartwarming time of the year – so it’s easy to understand why we have made it an annual tradition to support Cobb Christmas,” says Kimberly Garwood, Traton’s Director of Marketing.

 

Cobb Christmas is a non-profit, non-denominational organization, dedicated to helping low-income and working-poor families of Cobb County during the holiday season. The organization, fully run by volunteers, provides gifts from infants to children up to fifteen years old. Each family gets a box of food, and each child receives a minimum of three age-appropriate toys.

 

Traton Homes has been a long-time partner with Cobb Christmas. “For more than a decade, we’ve collected toys through company, employee, community and vendor donations. At the end of the collection period, there’s nothing more gratifying than to stuff a Cobb County Transit Bus full of toys for kids in need,” says Garwood.

 

In addition to collecting toys at Traton’s corporate office at 720 Kennesaw Avenue in Marietta, all of Traton’s model homes throughout metro Atlanta also serve as drop-off locations for new, unwrapped toys. Other donations, including cash and food, may be made directly to Cobb Christmas at CobbChristmas.net.

Renovation project to more than double capacity at Roswell women’s shelter

Group with shovels 1Roswell, GA – On Friday, October 6, HomeAid Atlanta and The Drake House celebrated the groundbreaking of The Drake Village with volunteer Builder Captain Dan O’Dwyer of O’Dwyer Homes. The Drake Village is a renovation of two eight-unit apartment buildings located on the property adjacent to The Drake House's existing crisis housing complex. When complete, the new facility will more than double The Drake House's capacity to serve homeless women and their children, going from 44 beds to 100 beds.

This will be HomeAid’s third project with The Drake House, and Dan O'Dwyer's second. In 2006, Mr. O'Dwyer led a total renovation of two existing eight-unit apartment buildings with HomeAid, the first crisis housing ever offered by The Drake House. In 2015, Vincent Longo of Vincent Longo Custom Builders and HomeAid completed a 1,000 square foot expansion of The Drake Center, adding a "mom classroom" and teen center. The 2015 project also included a complete renovation of staff offices for ADA compliance.

The Drake House Executive Director, Kathy Swahn shared her excitement over new project, "The Drake Village will allow us to double our capacity and offer extended housing for an additional 24 months to our successful graduates. By offering an affordable housing option at a time when market rents are escalating in our community, our mothers and children will be further stabilized and able to have program support and budget counseling. This is our third partnership with HomeAid Atlanta, and with the experience of Dan O'Dwyer having renovated our first sixteen units in 2006, we know he has the expertise and heart for this work. We are very grateful to be working with Dan again!"

HomeAid Atlanta, founded in 2001, is a nonprofit organization that builds new lives for homeless families and individuals through housing and community outreach. HomeAid works in partnership with the building industry, as well as community building organizations, to assist people experiencing homelessness. To date, HomeAid Atlanta has completed over 85 housing, remodel and care day projects at locations that serve victims of domestic violence, teen mothers, veterans and more. HomeAid Atlanta and The Drake House celebrate the groundbreaking of The Drake Village with volunteer Builder Captain Dan O’Dwyer of O’Dwyer Homes. The Drake Village is a renovation of two eight-unit apartment buildings located on the property adjacent to The Drake House's existing crisis housing complex. When complete, the new facility will provide affordable housing and continued programming for an additional sixteen Drake House graduate families for up to 24 months. The total capacity is more than doubling in size, from 44 beds to 100 beds. This will be HomeAid’s third project with The Drake House, and Dan O'Dwyer's second. In 2006, Mr. O'Dwyer led a total renovation of two existing eight-unit apartment buildings, the first crisis housing ever offered by The Drake House.

HomeAid Atlanta, founded in 2001, is a nonprofit organization that builds new lives for homeless families and individuals through housing and community outreach. HomeAid works in partnership with the building industry, as well as community building organizations, to assist people experiencing homelessness. To date, HomeAid Atlanta has completed over 85 housing, remodel and care day projects at locations that serve victims of domestic violence, teen mothers, veterans and more.
